Welcome to the Central Montana Astronomy Society Website.

Our Mission

The Central Montana Astronomy Society provides a place for local amateur star gazers to exchange ideas and techniques and to provide a fellowship atmosphere where people share a common interest of the cosmos.  We are organized for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes, including the promotion of the study of astronomy though instruction, lectures, public viewing, and astronomical conventions.

April 13-14, 2012: The 13th annual Astronomy Weekend at Carroll College.

On Friday, April 13, 2012 the Neuman Astronomical Society and Helena Astronomical Society team up to present a free screening of The City Dark, a well-reviewed new movie on light pollution and its effects on humans and animals. The screening takes place in the college’s Simperman Hall Wiegand Amphitheatre at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, April 14, 2012  astronomy activities for the whole family will occur in the Carroll Campus Center from noon to 4 p.m. Activities include solar viewing, astronomy displays by students of Dr. Kelly Cline, and a family-friendly astronomy scavenger hunt with a Milky Way candy bar grand prize. Carroll’s Neuman Observatory, celebrating its 75th anniversary, will be open for touring from noon to 4 as will a telescope display led by local amateur astronomers.

On Saturday night, Astronomy Weekend wraps up with guest speaker Dr. Christina Dunn presenting“Creating the Giant: Fabricating the Mirrors of the European Extremely Large Telescope,” at 7 p.m. in the college’s Simperman Hall Wiegand Amphitheatre. Dunn’s talk will cover the technological feat of constructing the world’s largest telescope, able to view distant earth-like planets and material spiraling into black holes.

The next meeting will be May 9, 2012 at 6:30 PM in room 216, Paris Gibson Education Center at the corner of 25th Street and Central Ave. Park in the Lot behind (south of) the school. Enter the parking at 25th Street and 1st Avenue South.  Enter the Doors on the left side. See The Picture Of The Doors
